Total Mexican Exports of Textile and Apparel Products

From January to September 2025, export values decreased by 15% compared to the same period in 2024.
Some companies within the Textile and Apparel sector exhibit a high degree of vertical integration, participating in every stage of the production process—from the manufacturing of yarn and fabrics to the design, garment assembly, and marketing of the final product.

Textiles From January to September 2025, the leading export products in the textile and apparel sector accounted for 70% of the total. Technical textiles stood out at 17%, followed by non-wovens (16%), woven fabrics (10%), and carpets (10%).
APPAREL
In the apparel segment, the leading products accounted for 72% of exports during the first half of 2025. Trousers led the category at 24%, followed by T-shirts (16%), surgical towels (13%), and curtains and bedskirts (8%).

United States Imports of Textile and Apparel Products

From January to August 2025, Mexico ranked as the fifth-largest trading partner of the United States in terms of Textile and Apparel imports. During this period, imports reached a value of $3.45 billion (USD), representing a 0.05% increase compared to 2024.
As of 2025, China remains the primary trading partner; imports of textile and apparel goods from this country total $13.978 billion (USD). However, so far this year, there has been a 23% decrease compared to 2024.
The main commodities imported by the United States from other countries were trousers, sweaters, t-shirts, and dresses, which together accounted for 39% of the country’s total imports.

From January to September 2025, textile and apparel imports reached $9,874 million USD, representing a 2% increase compared to the same period last year.

Imports showed an upward trend starting in March, with an 11% increase compared to the same month of the previous year; however, by September 2025, they were 4% below September 2024 levels.

From January to September 2025, four products accounted for 55% of the textile sector’s imports: non-wovens (17%), coated fabrics (14%), woven fabrics (12%), and filament fabrics (11%).
In the case of apparel products, four categories accounted for 48% of total imports: trousers (18%), t-shirts (11%), surgical towels (10%), and sweaters (9%).

The primary country of origin is the United States, accounting for 43% of the total value of textile imports.
Apparel Sector Imports:
These primarily originate from China, accounting for 37% of total apparel products.
Textile and Apparel Sector Imports:
Four countries account for 65% of total imports: China (33%), the United States (21%), Vietnam (6%), and Bangladesh (5%).

In the third quarter of 2025, manufacturing GDP exceeded 5,189,936 million pesos (MXN). Of this total, the Textile and Apparel Industry contributed 92.8 billion pesos, representing 1.79%.

Composition of GDP, Subsectors
The manufacturing of apparel products requires various inputs, such as yarns, non-wovens, filament fabrics, and woven fabrics, among others. Apparel products account for 55% of the Textile and Apparel Industry’s GDP.
The Textile and Apparel Industry’s GDP has yet to recover to its Q3 2019 levels; currently, the sector sits 22% below that benchmark.
Apparel is the most affected segment, recording a 28% decline compared to the second quarter of 2019.
Formal employment in recent years
Jobs in the Textile-Apparel Industry
The total number of people employed in the industry closed October 2025 at 1,096,923. Although a slight cumulative recovery is observed in the year (+1% vs Jan-25), the long-term trend is contractionary, registering a drop of -6% annually compared to 2024 and -12% compared to 2023.
A shift in the employment structure is evident: the 2.88% decrease in formal jobs coincided with a 3.24% increase in informal employment. Currently, 67.5% of employed personnel (740,254 people) work informally, with 72% concentrated in the garment sector.
Employment in the industry is predominantly female, representing 68% of the total. Within formal employment in the garment sector, women hold 53% of the jobs.
The year 2019 stands out as the period with the highest average total employment. From this peak, the industry demonstrates a structural inability to recover those levels; after a partial rebound in 2022 (96%) compared to 2019, the indicator has steadily declined to 81% in 2025, reflecting a cumulative contraction of almost one-fifth of employment compared to its best year.

Of the Manufacturing Industries, the Textile-Clothing Sector is where there is the greatest participation of women, of which, as of October, in the manufacture of ready-made products is where there is the greatest participation in formal employment with 53%.

The Textile Industry is present throughout the Mexican Republic.
In the northern part of the country, there is the cotton agro-industry, the main input used in the sector.
In the central-southwest states, most of the jobs in the textile subsector are concentrated.
In the apparel subsector, most of the jobs are located in the northem part of the country.
